The Truth About Stress, Burnout, and Your Body
If you're searching for answers about chronic stress or burnout, you're not alone and you're right to be concerned. The effects of stress aren’t just emotional. Over time, prolonged stress leads to real, measurable changes in the body that can put your life at risk.
I know this firsthand.
Several years ago, I was hospitalized for food poisoning. But during my stay, doctors quickly discovered something much more alarming: my magnesium levels were dangerously low. So low, in fact, that I was at serious risk of a sudden cardiac arrest at just 35 years old.
The Body Breaks Down Under Stress
The truth? This wasn’t just about diet or supplements. It was years of unrelenting work stress, poor boundaries, and ignoring my body’s signals.
Chronic stress drains your body of key nutrients, especially magnesium.
Research shows that chronic stress elevates cortisol, your primary stress hormone, which in turn:
Disrupts your metabolism
Suppresses immunity
Depletes essential minerals
Triggers anxiety and emotional exhaustion
(Source: Sapolsky, 2004; NIH)
Low magnesium alone is linked to heart arrhythmias, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. It’s a silent but critical risk factor for people under prolonged stress (Rosanoff et al., 2012; DiNicolantonio et al., 2018).
I Did Everything “Right” ...But Still Felt Wrong
After leaving the hospital, I followed every wellness guideline:
Supplements ✅
Clean eating ✅
Sleep hygiene ✅
Therapy ✅
Yet... I still felt off. My nervous system was stuck in a loop of hyper-vigilance and fatigue. I knew I needed something deeper.
That’s when my therapist suggested Reiki.
Reiki: The Turning Point in My Healing
Reiki is an energy healing practice that promotes deep relaxation and supports the body’s natural healing processes. It doesn’t override your system. It supports it.
For me, Reiki was the first practice that helped me regulate from the inside out. I didn’t just feel “calmer," I felt more grounded, present, and safe in my body.
What Science Says About Reiki
Modern research supports what Reiki practitioners have long known:
Reiki helps lower heart rate and blood pressure
It improves heart rate variability (a key marker of stress resilience)
It reduces perceived stress and anxiety
It promotes a shift to parasympathetic dominance—your “rest and restore” state
(Sources: Thrane & Cohen, 2014; McManus, 2017)
Reiki Complements, Never Replaces, Medical Care
Let’s be clear: Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment. It’s a safe, non-invasive complement to any treatment plan.
Whether you’re facing:
Emotional burnout
Chronic anxiety or fatigue
Stress-related health issues
Grief or overwhelm
Reiki can help support your journey back to balance.
